What is fiber?

Fiber is the part of a grain or vegetable that cannot be digested. There are really two types of fiber in carbohydrates:


Soluble fiber


Soluble fiber can be broken down by enzymes in the stomach. When it is added into food it almost acts like fat, except it does not have calories. Rolled oats, beans, and broccoli, have an abundance of soluble fiber in them.


Insoluble fiber 


Insoluble fiber acts as a cleaning agent in the gastrointestinal tract. It helps you to digest your food more quickly and efficiently.

Insoluble fiber is found in many foods including whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. It is not found in meat or dairy products.

It is recommended that a women should try to eat at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day, while men should try to get around 30 to 38 grams.

Much like counting calories, you can calculate your fiber intake to ensure you are getting the right amount.
